What does it mean to be sustainable?
Becoming sustainable is no longer a choice but a commitment to the natural world that has so inspired us. From the oceans, rivers and lakes that rejuvenate us, to hushed forests, clean air and buzzing hedgerows that boost our minds, we ask ourselves what does living sustainably truly mean? And how can we be mindful when shopping and choosing our bath and body products?
Sustainability is a collection of conscious, small decisions that ripple outwards. By embracing refillable bottles, selecting products with natural ingredients, using energy mindfully and recycling plastics, these subtle steps are part of a larger journey towards protecting the environment.
Here are five simple ways to weave sustainability into your everyday life, with a little help from our eco-conscious staples.
1. Prioritise Natural and Sustainably Sourced Ingredients
From the windswept shores to the calm of hidden coves, the natural world offers us everything we need to feel restored. By choosing products made with ethically sourced, botanical ingredients, you help protect the very landscapes that create a sense of belonging, while supporting environmentally friendly farming and production methods.
2. Choose Refillable Products
Take a step towards a more sustainable lifestyle by embracing refillable products - a simple yet impactful way to tread more lightly. Each refill helps protect the world we cherish, supporting a cycle of reuse and thoughtful consumption, and ensuring that our coastlines and countryside stay pristine for generations to come.
After months of thoughtful research, exploration and dedication to getting it just right, land&water unveiled our 5 litre refill solution back in 2021, bringing eco-friendly changes to your everyday routine. 1 litre refills are landing in October and you can purchase your most-loved bath and body products and feel better about the planet and your bank balance.
3. Recycle & Reuse
Reduce waste and conserve the earth’s precious resources by recycling plastic and reusing the packaging which is filled with your favourite essentials. Reimagine the life of everyday products, by diverting materials from landfills and reducing the need for new production. Effortless adjustments, like reusing bottles or choosing recyclable packaging, create a positive impact, contributing to a cleaner, greener future. Every small action makes a difference, fostering a cycle of care that benefits both nature and the world around you.
All land&water plastic bottles are crafted from 100% traceable ocean-bound plastic, collected from coastal communities at risk of pollution. In line with our commitment to sustainability, 90% of our packaging is made in the British Isles, including our 100% post-consumer recycled bottles.
4. Use Energy Efficiently
Being mindful of how we use energy is a powerful, yet vital, step towards a more sustainable way of living. Simple choices can become natural choices - switching to energy-saving bulbs, turning off lights when not needed or using appliances wisely can significantly reduce your carbon footprint.
At land&water, we carefully select manufacturers for quality, ethos and environmental credentials, and they share our commitment to minimising energy consumption, using minimal and re-used packaging, waterless printing and biomass fuel to name but a few. The products we curate are intended to have as light an impact on the planet as possible.
5. Support Local and Sustainable Brands
The decisions you make as a consumer matter. Supporting brands that are deeply committed to caring for the planet and finding the most sustainable solutions, helps protect the beauty that fuels us - whether it’s the shoreline that elevates our spirits or the untamed wild that brings us peace. With every purchase from brands pushing for B-Corp certification and championing cruelty-free products, you become part of a community that values nature, people and quality. Together, we nurture the world that sustains us.
land&water’s Sustainability Journey
As the spark that lit the land&water fire – shaping our philosophy, product concept and very existence – nature is what we hold most dear. We’re committed to treading as lightly as possible on the natural world and in 2020 we launched land&water with two key environmental principles:
-
To create natural products using only ethical and sustainable ingredients.
-
To push the boundaries and find the best packaging solution possible.
Currently, we are going through a rigorous assessment to become B Corp certified. Becoming a B Corp will fundamentally change the way we do business - and we’ll be legally required to report on our impact every year.
