The next stop on our Take Me To… tour is The Queen’s Head, a characterful 19th-century inn set in the charming village of Broad Chalke near Salisbury. With its idyllic surroundings of verdant green fields and thatched cottages, this countryside sanctuary is a fitting home for our land&water collections.
If rambling in rolling hills followed by a thirst-quenching real ale, a hearty pub meal, and a restful sleep equals your idea of a perfect day, The Queen’s Head won’t disappoint.
It's perhaps unsurprising that this multi-award-winning historic pub made The Sunday Times ‘Best Places to Stay in 2024’ list, given its prominent position in the enchanting village of Broad Chalke in the Chalke Valley. Broad Chalke itself boasts a spot on The Sunday Times 2023 ‘Best Places to Live’ list, and from Sir Terry Pratchett to former Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden, has housed an illustrious cast of famous residents over the years, considering its diminutive size.
Take me to... locations
In 2023, the Chickpea Group – a vibrant hospitality business focused on creating cosy, comfortable and memorable spaces across the Southwest – acquired The Queen’s Head. Showcasing these signature traits, the interior blends original features and contemporary comfort. With flagstone floors, low-beamed ceilings and inglenook fireplaces, inviting corners beckon you to settle and recharge after a day spent exploring the great outdoors.
If the sun’s shining, the beer garden over the road is a blissful place to unwind with a glass of something cold, perched atop felled tree trunk tables and chairs from the nearby Fonthill Estate, with vistas of the surrounding countryside and wildflower meadows. Take your pick from a local beer, a glass of wine from the carefully curated list, or a classic cocktail.
Refuel and recharge
The Queen’s Head takes pride in its culinary offerings, celebrating locally sourced ingredients in ever-evolving seasonal dishes. You’ll find a mix of satisfying pub favourites like burgers and pies on the menu, as well as finer options like Cornish ray wing or Herdwick lamb shoulder with borlotti beans & salsa verde – and roasts with all the trimmings on Sundays.
Retreating to your room post-feast, you’ll discover a haven as warm and welcoming as the pub below. A modern building off the pub’s leafy courtyard garden houses the inn’s four en suite rooms, each individually and unpretentiously decorated in calming natural shades that complement the landscape. Textiles, artwork and furniture from local makers and antique markets provide flashes of colour and pattern. Quality and sustainability are at the heart of The Queen’s Head and Chickpea Group – and you’re sure to experience these philosophies during your stay with carefully considered touches like land&water hand and body washes and lotions in every bathroom.
Wildlife, watercress and wandering…
Well-rested and ready to venture back out into the fresh country air, set off on foot along one of the area’s great walking routes. The 11km Broad Chalke and Fifield Downs circular walk is a local favourite, traversing the chalk downs within Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where you’ll encounter an array of birds and wildlife, breath-stealing views, and watercress beds along the banks of the River Ebble on the final stretch.
Seeking a cultural day trip? Head to nearby Salisbury, a cathedral city brimming with mediaeval history, independent shopping boutiques and excellent eateries.
PRODUCT ESSENCE OF THE QUEEN’S HEAD:
After long days spent wandering the countryside and climbing over stiles, return to your sanctuary to freshen up – with hydrating spike moss extract blended with uplifting citrus and mint – before settling down for dinner.
The Queen’s Head chefs love the land&water Hand Wash as much as their guests, for its natural hydration, anti-inflammatory properties and enlivening scent.
