A sunrise dip in the sea, an after-work plunge in the river, or powering through laps at the pool; there’s no doubt that swimming is nourishing for body, mind and soul – but not always for skin.
While cold-water swimming can offer some skin benefits – such as improving circulation, reducing inflammation and tightening pores – the types of water we usually swim in, whether salt, fresh, or chlorinated, are generally not skin-friendly, often stripping moisture, causing irritation and leaving behind residues and pollutants.
That’s why a swimming skincare routine is so crucial – preparing skin effectively before entering the water, and cleansing, soothing and moisturising afterwards.
If you like your swims with a wild outdoor setting, it’s worth noting that wearing a wetsuit provides an extra layer of protection against skin irritants and sun damage. It also shields you from the cold, helping to stretch out the length of your dip.
Read on to discover some of the effects different water types can have on your skin’s delicate barrier, and how a pre- and post-swim skincare routine can help give a warm glow both inside and out.
How do different water types affect your skin?
Saltwater
Saltwater can be rich in skin-loving minerals like zinc, potassium and magnesium – the same soothing compound found in Epsom salts and a key ingredient in our natural Salt Scrub. While saltwater can offer natural exfoliating and antibacterial benefits, it also tends to be drying and slightly abrasive, drawing moisture from the skin and leaving it in need of replenishment, particularly for those with a sensitive skin type.
In the UK, you’ll find most opportunities for a saltwater swim in the great outdoors – from a bracing sea dip to a wallow in a tidal pool or saltwater lido. But, open-air swimming also means exposure to the elements, including the sun. Since water can reflect UV rays and increase sun exposure, it's essential to remember sun protection.
Freshwater
Whether drifting down a river or immersing yourself in a lake, freshwater swimming can lift your mood and awaken your senses as the cold water washes over you.
While freshwater can be gentler on skin than salt or chlorinated water, it can sometimes contain pollutants that cause irritation and skin rashes. Before taking a dip, always check the area for the risk of algae blooms, which can be toxic and cause sickness as well as skin irritation. And, as with saltwater swimming, you’ll need to remember sun protection.
Chlorinated water
More focused on getting the laps in or making the most of the hotel facilities? Try pool swimming for a physical and mental boost with added protection from the elements.
However, while the chlorine in pool water – usually found in both indoor and outdoor pools – serves an essential hygiene purpose, it can be extremely harsh on skin, disrupting its natural barrier, causing dehydration and sometimes inflammation, especially with prolonged exposure. Fortunately, most pools have shower facilities, meaning you can rinse off in clean water as soon as you step out.
Pre-swim skincare routine – prepare and protect
Before taking the plunge, prepare your skin with a lightweight moisturiser to form a protective barrier. Our land&water Body Lotion contains samphire, shea butter and sweet almond oil to create an ideal buffer against salt or chlorine.
Our natural facial moisturisers contain the botanical active, sea buckthorn, to lock in hydration and help protect against the elements.
If you’re swimming outdoors – such as in the sea, a lake, river, or in an outdoor pool – don't forget to apply a waterproof SPF and protective lip balm to guard against the sun. If wearing a wetsuit, you’ll still need to use facial sunscreen. Choose one that’s reef-safe and avoids chemicals that can cause harm to marine life. Ideally, apply your sunscreen 15-20 minutes before entering the water, to give your skin time to absorb it.
Skincare after swimming – rinse, refresh and restore
As soon as you step out of the water, rinse thoroughly with clean, fresh water to remove salt, chlorine, organic matter, and pollutants.
Follow this with a gentle cleanse for the body and face. Our Body Wash and Face Wash both contain mint to remove impurities and revitalise your spirits after your swim. If you have time, wash and condition your hair, as saltwater and chlorinated water can leave it dry and tangled.
After towelling off, for an instant dose of skin nourishment, reapply body lotion and face moisturiser. If you’re feeling a tingle of irritation from the water, or for areas that need deeper nourishment, our All Elements Skin Balm is the ideal companion to restore and soothe.
Use a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week to remove buildup of any impurities. Cleanse, calm and detoxify the body with our Salt Scrub. A capful of our Bath & Body Oil will soothe aching limbs while delivering a luxurious moisture boost for skin.
Our Natural Exfoliator for face brings balance and restores your skin’s natural glow with walnut shell & vitamin E. For deeper hydration, apply a daily Face Oil after moisturising, to comfort and replenish. Finally, introduce a Night Serum into your bedtime routine for overnight repair and rejuvenation.
